GOP presidential candidate Marco Rubio made some fashion waves this week when he was photographed on the campaign trail wearing what appear to be boots with two-inch heels. On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” the show’s co-hosts were dumbstruck by the Florida senator’s on-the-trail footwear, mocking him mercilessly.
It all started with a tweet by Michael Barbaro of the New York Times, who photographed Rubio on the campaign trail Tuesday, noting his height-enhancing fashion choice.
“Marco Rubio is rocking some seriously fashionable black boots today in New Hampshire.”

“Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarborough poked fun at Rubio for what he termed his “Austin Powers” fashion.
“Oh my god look at that!” exclaimed Scarborough when they showed the above image, before continuing, “They’re shagalicious!”
“No, no, he didn’t do that! He did not wear those,” exclaimed his co-host, Mika Brzezinski.
Scarborough feigned shock and awe, shouting:
“Stop the presses! I really don’t believe he wore those boots. This is straight out of an Austin Powers movie… and you’re wearing that in New Hampshire?”
According to Politico, Ted Cruz’s campaign also had some fun at Rubio’s expense, when communications director, Rick Tyler tweeted: “A Vote for Marco Rubio Is a Vote for Men’s High-Heeled Booties,” linking an article by New York Magazine’s women’s blog “The Cut.”
“The Cut” article compared the 5’10” senator’s footwear to that of One Direction boy-band member Harry Styles, albeit “with a slightly less pilgrim flair.”
