Failing Upwards: The John Cornyn Story

After John Cornyn was reelected in 2008, he took over as the National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman. Since Cornyn was viewed as smart and conservative, most Republicans were pleased with that selection. However, Cornyn proved to be a DISASTER.

To be fair, Cornyn did have a good year in 2010 when we added on 7 Senate seats, but let’s face it: the GOP had a once every half a century election victory; so EVERYONE did well.

Yet, even during that wave election, Cornyn tried to blow one of our biggest successes.

You see, most conservatives were THRILLED that Marco Rubio had thrown his hat in the ring to run for the Senate in Florida. Here we had a young, charismatic, conservative, electable Hispanic son of immigrants who was immediately embraced by the GOP base. Rubio seemed like a no-brainer of a selection given that almost everyone seemed to be saying that the GOP had looked too old, too bland, and too white in 2008.

Then, Charlie Crist decided to run and he was immediately endorsed by Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Lamar Alexander and Mitch McConnell among others. One of those others was John Cornyn at the NRSC who had this to say:

“I am pleased today to endorse Governor Charlie Crist for the United States Senate. With his record of reform in Florida, I know that Governor Crist will bring a fresh perspective to Washington in our efforts to fight for lower taxes, less government, and new job creation for all Americans. Charlie Crist is a tireless advocate on behalf of all Floridians and one of only three Governors who earned an ‘A’ from the CATO Institute for his efforts to restrain spending and cut taxes last year.”

When that happened, I helped organize a group of bloggers that publicly confronted the NRSC, told the NRSC to stay out of the primaries and encouraged people not to donate to it as long as it continued to do so.

The NRSC didn’t do any more public endorsements after that and, as everyone knows, Rubio won out and in the end the GOP had a great year.

Fast forward to 2012.

The Democrats had a lot of vulnerable seats and early on, most people thought the GOP had a great opportunity to take back the Senate. Four to five seats gained didn’t seem outside the realm of possibility. However, by the time Todd Akin stuck his foot in his mouth, most people thought we probably only had an opportunity to pick up 3 seats.

Yet, in the end? We lost two seats.

Much has been made of Akin and Mourdock losing, but we STILL should have picked up a couple of seats regardless. Unfortunately, the NRSC’s terrible recruiting and poor help for the campaigns turned what should have been a good year for the GOP into a strengthened hand for the Democrats. This was not inevitable since the GOP added governorships and almost held its ground in the House, where we have such a huge advantage that it was almost a given we’d lose seats. So, John Cornyn’s NRSC underperformed and was a huge disappointment in 2012.

So naturally, this being the “stupid party,” what happened next? John Cornyn was elected Minority Whip.

So now, we have Mitch McConnell, a timid man who been consistently and persistently outmaneuvered and outsmarted by Harry Reid, teamed up with John Cornyn who was a failure in the last election cycle.

Put another way, the GOP in the Senate is now being led by two men who have such terrible instincts that they endorsed Charlie Crist over Marco Rubio.

Sigh.

Psalm 121:1-8(KJV), “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. 3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. 4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. 6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. 8 The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”

Psalm 122:1-9(KJV), “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord. 2 Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem. 3 Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together: 4 Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the Lord. 5 For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David. 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. 7 Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces. 8 For my brethren and companions’ sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee. 9 Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek thy good.”

Psalm 91:1-16(KJV), “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. 8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. 9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. 13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. 14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.”

Praying in Jesus’ name in agreement with His Holly Spirit and for God’s Glory.
