This story about a business owner adding an Obamacare surcharge to his menu is intriguing, but it buries the real lead.

While some business owners threaten to cut workers’ hours to avoid paying for their health care, a West Palm Beach, Fla., restaurant owner is going even further. John Metz said he will add a 5 percent surcharge to customers’ bills to offset what he said are the increased costs of Obamacare, along with reducing his employees’ hours.

“If I leave the prices the same, but say on the menu that there is a 5 percent surcharge for Obamacare, customers have two choices. They can either pay it and tip 15 or 20 percent, or if they really feel so inclined, they can reduce the amount of tip they give to the server, who is the primary beneficiary of Obamacare,” Metz told The Huffington Post. “Although it may sound terrible that I’m doing this, it’s the only alternative. I’ve got to pass the cost on to the consumer.”

Metz is the franchisor of Hurricane Grill & Wings, which has 48 locations, five of which are corporate owned, and president and owner of RREMC Restaurants, which runs approximately 40 Denny’s and several Dairy Queen locations. He planned to use the 5 percent surcharge tactic in all his restaurants starting in January 2014, when Obamacare is fully implemented.

Interesting, but how many business owners are going to ultimately do something like that? Very few. On the other hand, the arbitrary limit on the number of full time employees needed to trigger the implementation of Obamacare in a business is going to have a terrible impact on people’s lives.

Metz said he will hold meetings at all his restaurants starting in December to discuss the surcharge and to tell employees “that because of Obamacare, we are going to be cutting front-of-the-house employees to under 30 hours, effective immediately.”

…Metz said he understands the problems that will create not just for his scheduling but for his employees. “I think it’s a terrible thing. It’s ridiculous that the maximum hours we can give people is 28 hours a week instead of 40,” Metz said. “It’s going to force my employees to go out and get a second job.”

Despite the one-two hit his employees might take with possibly fewer hours and lower tips, Metz said he is not anti-insurance. His current coverage for full-time employees costs him $5,000 to $6,000 annually, he said. “Obviously, I’d love to cover all our employees under that insurance,” he said, “But to pay $5,000 per employee would cost us $175,000 per restaurant, and unfortunately, most of our restaurants don’t make $175,000 a year. I can’t afford it.”

Currently, the law states that employers with more than 50 full-time equivalent employees will be charged a penalty for any employees over 30 full-time employees that they don’t cover. Several employers have cited that provision — including Darden Restaurants, Papa John’s, Apple-Metro and Jimmy John’s — in announcing plans to skirt the law by cutting employees’ hours to make them part time.

In other words, Obamacare is now giving a lot of companies a powerful incentive NOT to hire full-time workers. Furthermore, imagine yourself in the place of the front office staff Metz has just been forced to make part-time employees. The article doesn’t say whether or not they already have insurance, but if so, they’re about to lose it. They’re also going to lose hours which will mean that they have to get by on greatly reduced paychecks or alternately, get a second part-time job and then juggle schedules at two different places of employment, which may mean more time lost in transit, odd working hours and increased daycare costs. Additionally, full time employees are more likely to get ahead at work. If you promote from within, you’re more likely to look at everyone working full-time before considering the part-timers.

The number of people impacted by this change in the law is not likely to be small either.

Many retail, food service and hospitality firms, including Darden, already offer all of their full-time employees bare-bones health insurance plans. But these plans, which have coverage limits, will become illegal under Obamacare in 2014. Darden and other firms face a stark choice: Buy more expensive health insurance for their full-time employees (which normally costs more than $5,000 for each employee), pay the $2,000 fine or hire fewer full-time workers.

More and more employers are going this last route.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Pillar Hotels and Resorts (parent company of Sheraton and other hotel chains), CKE Restaurants Inc. (parent company of Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr.) and Anna’s Linens Inc. have all started to replace full-time departures with part-time hires. According to a July survey of retail and hospitality companies by Mercer consulting, 32 percent of firms said they were likely to reduce the number of employees working 30 hours or more per week.

A lot of workers who aren’t making that much money to begin with are going to be hurt badly as a result of Obamacare, but unfortunately the candidate who pledged to stop Obamacare from happening lost and elections have consequences.

The Obama cabal will respond to this after 2014 by either:1) requiring businesses to pay a fine for having part-time workers who do not qualify for Obamacare or 2) mandating the hour requirement be so small that almost all part time workers will qualify for Obamacare. Never underestimate the determination of this government to get it’s hands around the throat of the business owner.

I wonder if this economic cost was calculated into the cost of Obamacare.

Obamacare was never meant to help anybody, it was meant to decrease the amount of baby boomers using up the social security benefits that they paid into, but the government spent decades ago. How can the government threaten to stop the checks if they shut the government down due to no money? They could not do that if here was a “lockbox”. Here is an example: My grandfather, who did not have SS by the way because he was retired Railroad who had the evil privatized SS that the Republicans want to switch us over to so he received $2,000 a month in the eighties vs $600 everyone else got for SS. Anyways say he WAS on SS. He retired in 1977 at the age of 65. He died in Sept of 2011 at the age of 99. If he just received an AVERAGE of $700 per month the total he would have received by the time he died would have been $285,600. So around a quarter of a million dollars. So for every FOUR seniors it will cost society ONE MILLION DOLLARS!! JUST FOUR!!! Millions and Millions of baby boomers are retiring and collecting SS, Medicare, Disability, Food Stamps etc. For a government that has NO money because they spent it all on social programs that they had no business being in. Get the picture?

So what is the solution in your book ?? Should we just do away with SS — where would that leave the seniors and disabled– ONLY 6 % of the deficit is do to welfare– another 43% for SS and medicare– who are you going to axe– furthermore– why do you protect these greedy business owners who mistreat their employees forcing them to take assistance ??

      • TexasHawk

First of all, SS will be done away with, either by going bankrupt or by inflation. Seniors and disabled will still get their measly $800 per month, but it will buy practically nothing. SS used to be $50 per month. What would that buy today? Keep printing our money and that is what will happen. Second you obviously have NO idea what business’ make. IF a business made oodles of profits it would be swamped with competitors in no time flat which would drive their prices and thus their profits down as well. An employee is only worth what he produces for the employer. If you hire someone for $10 and he produces $20 that has to go towards the cost of him, the overhead, and profit. You can’t just tack another $2 onto that without allowing that $2 to be taken away somewhere else. Otherwise the business would already be charging the extra 2 bucks if they could get away with it. They can’t. You can’t take water from one end of the pool and pour it in the other end and expect it to rise. If the money wasn’t there in the first place it won’t be there now. Why do you assume the business owners are greedy, what about the employees? I have known quite a few business owners that have been losing money the last several years. They have mortgaged their homes, used up their savings and retirements or even foregone their own salaries in order to save their companies from going under. I don’t see a lot of employees that can say the same when it comes to trying to save their own jobs. How come they are not the greedy ones? Why don’t they work 80 hours a week for ten years to build up a business to watch it go down the drain because a government in charge that has never run a lemonade stand is telling these businesses what they can and cannot afford?

  • TexasHawk

Another ramification that will come from this is tax liability. I saw this when I worked for H & R Block. Each job thinks they are your one and only when it comes to taxes. When you have two or three part time jobs none of them take enough out. Then when the employee goes to file their taxes they owe money. Say you have two part time jobs, each making $15,000. Each job assumes you will have your deductions of say $10,000 so they only take out enough taxes to cover the $5,000 difference. So you only paid enough taxes to cover $10,000 of taxable income when you actually have $20,000. That could create a $1,500 additional tax liability. NOT a good situation to be in.

  • Chris Alder

At the end of the day when all the Obama morons cry and whine about losing their hours or jobs because of the evil business owners, they should still remember that they can’t bite the hand that feeds them. Oh, and when they lose all those hours, they will still need to purchase healthcare for themselves…… Justice…. It’s sad that there will be a lot of innocent victims who voted the right way who will end up in this mess….. Jobageddon is here…..

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000893925250 Edith DeVader Fuller

Except the “evil business owners” are not doing their “patriotic duty” by not CREATING all these new jobs and have NEVER provided any food for the average Joe– so I will bite and demand that they do their fair share and quit holding the American economy hostage !!!

If the business is not making a profit, then what’s the point in having a business. And he said he wasn’t going to tax the middle-class.

I’m a retired teacher, 72 years of age. We received good educations back in the day … including Economics in High School. It appears they are not even teaching Economics in College today, in many of the liberal arts colleges and universities.

“The Naked Communist” (1958) #17 of their 45 declared goals:
        17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission
belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers’ associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

Home school. Everyone who has even the remote capability to do so, needs to, and the sooner the better.

How Are You Obama Voters Liking Your King Now

    • http://www.facebook.com/mykec13 Myke Carter

They still think he’s great. They blame the employers for hurting people to make political points. They bite the hand that feeds and if it recoils they bite it again. They are completely stupid.

    • leo moon

You’re in America, friend ~ we have a president, elected by the people, not an appointed “king,” much to the GOP/TP’s chagrin.
But since you ask, I’m VERY much liking and respecting our president, and thanks very much for asking.

It’s ALWAYS the lib/dim who seeks to act like a tyrant (Obama saying how he’d like to be able to impose his will on Congress).

And odds are that this is going to hurt the ones who voted FOR Obama more. I know it will seem callous, but that seems fair to me. If you wanted Obama and his “ObamaIDon’tCare”, then you got it. Enjoy!

everything going according to Ovomits plan, destroy America. Can’t make everybody rich so make everybody poor except for a select few.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mykec13 Myke Carter

This is *not* Obama’s plan. He didn’t write ObamaCare. He is a front man through which communists are advancing their agenda. They are using his race as a shield and he is willing to allow them to use him in that manner. They *tried* ramming this crap through as “HillaryCare” in 1993 – the last time they had the House, White House and Senate. Republicans were successful in stopping them, however, in the 1994 elections. That’s why when they finally got another chance to do it again, they rammed it through by hook or by crook with zero Republican support. They were hellbent to not lose their opportunity the second time around and they didn’t. People act as if we haven’t had these arguments before but I’m telling you the exact same dialogues were hammered out in the early/mid 1990s and this is a *repeat* of all that – except this time the Republicans didn’t succeed.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Hugh-C-Young/100003334869589 Hugh C Young

Right on! You explained it well!

      • Pam Manghelli

You got that right Myke. This is not a new issue. The back room has been working this scheme for many years. Too bad no one has enough guts to stop them. America has been brain-washed.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000893925250 Edith DeVader Fuller

He didn’t write it. Actually Mitt Romney designed the ObamaCare template. Oops. Looks like you are the one that is brain-washed………….

Mike, you’re right! He didn’t write it. Actually Mitt Romney designed the ObamaCare template. Oops.

THANK GOD!! But there is a REPUBLICAN majority in Congress so why not stop it?? Because that is what the people of this country want– we are tired of being RAPED by your party and all its GREED………….

    • leo moon

      Wait ~ wasn’t that Mitt’s platform?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000893925250 Edith DeVader Fuller
