Yesterday, the Kingly President Obama issued 23 executive orders that he assured us would help reduce gun violence. While we wish to see a lessening of gun violence, it seems Obama’s true aim was to make America only feel safer while doing nothing to actually address the realities of gun violence.
How do I know that? Because the answer to reducing gun violence is painfully obvious and it is danced around by politicians who have a vendetta against the armed peasantry. If Obama truly wanted to make citizens safer, he would not be looking to add layers onto a background check system that, already, criminals don’t follow- he would be loosening restrictions for firearm carry.
As we read through the 23 executive orders, we should ask with each one, “How would this have stopped the Newtown shooting?” While Newtown is not the only shooting with which we must concern ourselves, it is the most horrific and the strongest catalyst for this recent gun control push.
How would this have stopped Newtown? Connecticut already has the fifth most-stringent gun laws in America. It even has an “assault weapons” ban. Adam Lanza’s mother had a rifle that had been grandfathered in, but was otherwise illegal for purchase since 1993.
Adam Lanza, in the days prior to the shooting, tried to buy a gun at Dick’s Sporting Goods, but was turned down. The background check worked.
So, what did the man with malice in his heart and a determination to kill do? He went and killed his mother and took her guns. And therein lies the problem with these gun control measures- it makes people like you and me jump through hoops, but does nothing to deter criminals who wish to create havoc.
Obama wants to strengthen the capability of private sellers to run background checks. But how does that stop the criminal who doesn’t care about the law? How would that stop the assassin who is looking to buy a Saturday Night Special out of the back of a car because he’s a felon and prohibited from buying a gun at a reputable gun shop?
Gun control laws don’t work. But that isn’t going to fly with people who refuse to think, but will only feel. So, Obama and other Democrats who have little use for the Bill of Rights make a big show of doing something- even though they know it won’t work.
As Biden researched these proposals and Obama reviewed them, I find it hard to believe that nobody, at any time, questioned, “How would this have stopped Newtown?” The truth is that they know it won’t do anything to stop gun violence, but they have no problem throwing the Second Amendment under the bus for the purpose of political convenience.
