The IRS scandal affirms what conservatives have been saying about big government all along. As they say, absolute power corrupts absolutely and the IRS’ willful and deliberate targeting of dissenting political organizations for harassment only validates the worst suspicions of those who have cautioned against big government.
It’s not that the IRS operates as thugs; Americans have known that for a long time. No, the real scandal is not that the IRS shakes down citizens to fund an ever-expanding government, the real scandal here is they have been operating as gatekeepers of who may or may not proceed with political advocacy undeterred. The IRS has been routinely hindering and squashing dissent and it’s time Americans take a good, hard look at this governmental bully and their nefarious tactics to quell opposition to big government.
That’s why the Tea Party will be holding a rally on Wednesday, June 19th at noon at the West lawn of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. The Tea Party Patriots and many others will be in attendance to demonstrate and demand accountability from our government at the appropriately-named “Audit the IRS Rally.”
As Chief Political Strategist for TheTeaParty.net, I have been asked to speak and I am honored to stand with other tea party groups in a united front to demand answers from our government who have grown too-comfortable stomping upon the rights that extend to all Americans.
Republican, Democrat, conservative, liberal, whatever- labels and political affiliations should not deter Americans from joining in to defend what is right. American liberties are under attack when our government routinely harasses a political group- any political group- for the purpose of hindering their efficacy or progress. TheTeaParty.net has been victimized by the IRS’ harassment squad for years and many other tea party organizations have as well and I am proud to stand together with The Tea Party Patriots, other tea party groups and many others who share in our outrage.
The tea party is unique. We do not offer cards to carry or demand a certain political allegiance; the tea party is a grassroots political movement comprised of people that believe in constitutionally-limited government and sane fiscal policy. We demand that the rights afforded to all Americans by our forefathers be respected and we demand that our voices be heard and never silenced by a government dedicated to squashing dissent.
This country has had a history of such abhorrent behavior and we look back on such attempts to squash free speech as dark days in our nation’s history. The civil rights movement of the 50’s and 60’s demanded that the government change its ways and those who demanded desegregation were subjected to government harassment.
It came in many forms; sometimes the squashing of dissent was as obvious as using firehoses to deter demonstrators, other times it was as covert as bugging hotel rooms of civil rights leaders to dig up dirt. The civil rights movement demanded that government listen and respect the fact that those who fought for equality were afforded the same right to speak out as anyone else. Still the government undermined and trampled the rights of those fighting for the worthwhile cause. It was shameful when government intimidated legitimate political advocacy yet, here we are again. The closest thing America has to a modern civil rights movement is the Tea Party. And like the civil rights movement of a generation ago, the Tea Party has been targeted by nefarious government officials. If Martin Luther King were alive today, he’d be a member of the Tea Party!
I am honored to be standing together with those who are willing to fight for our liberties and principles. Please join us in Washington to make our voices louder and tell the government that we will be heard and that routine governmental harassment is unacceptable.
