Whether the left wants to admit it or not, the fact remains that America was born from a quest for religious freedom. The first settlers stepped foot in America, looking for religious tolerance. Having found none in Europe, those who sought to worship as they believed traveled to an unknown land and began anew.
This principle of religious tolerance is under attack by the left and, more specifically, by the Obama Administration.
Of course, the history of the settlements, the colonies and the states are far more complicated than I’ve described. The reason for the formation of America is an amalgamation of a quest for freedom and capitalistic endeavors- both of which are under attack in modern America.
President Obama has been unable to even thinly veil his contempt for the founding religious principles of America. Of course, having spent twenty years listening to Reverend Wright preach that America is evil, it’s easy to see where his disdain comes from.
In a speech that seethed with ignorance and condescension, Obama spoke in Northern Ireland on Monday. He said,
“If towns remain divided—if Catholics have their schools and buildings and Protestants have theirs, if we can’t see ourselves in one another and fear or resentment are allowed to harden- that, too, encourages division and discourages cooperation.”
It is absolutely astonishing that he can be so tone deaf as to head to Northern Ireland, of all places, and lecture the pious people of the emerald isles about the dangers of parochial schools.
Obama’s (and many other statists’) problem with Catholic schools is the same problem King Henry VIII had- disciplined organized religions (like Catholicism) tell people to put their faith in a higher power and to follow a moral code as defined by God; statists like Obama or King Henry VIII would much rather the ignorant masses follow his edicts without question.
The left dislikes private schools, as a whole, because it provides an alternative to the state-run indoctrination camps that are public schools. Maintaining a firm hold on the message being promoted is vital to every despot and the left cannot abide a private-run school system that A) runs far more efficiently than the public system and B) offers a different perspective and undermines state power.
As a side note- It’s funny that in his travels to the Middle East, the president never lectured Muslims about the divisiveness of their religious ideology. He’s never advocated that Islam conform and “go along to get along.” Nope, such flagrant condescension and finger-wagging is reserved for Christians.
