In the aftermath of the attack in Benghazi, which occurred on the eleventh anniversary of the September 11th attacks, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice vehemently pushed the unlikely narrative that outrage over an obscure YouTube video caused the violence. Americans, by and large, didn’t buy it and the White House and the State Department eventually changed their story, leaving America to question, “Why is our government lying to us?”
As this scandal keeps getting worse and worse for the Obama Administration and the State Department, Rice finally came to her own defense yesterday and is sticking to her story that the State Department believed it was an impromptu attack.
“When discussing the attack against our facilities in Benghazi, I relied solely and squarely on the information provided to me by the intelligence community,’ Rice said Wednesday evening to reporters outside the U.N. Security Council.”
“I made clear that the information was preliminary, and that our investigations would give us the definitive answers,’ she added. ‘As a senior U.S. diplomat, I agreed to a White House request to appear on the Sunday shows to talk about the full range of national security issues of the day, which at that time were primarily and particularly the protests that were enveloping and threatening many diplomatic facilities, American diplomatic facilities around the world, and Iran’s nuclear program.”
Rice gave herself an “out” by claiming that there is an “investigation” going on, but that really wasn’t true in any practical sense. It took 23 days- over three weeks- to get FBI officials to the consulate; they spent less than 24 hours in Libya, then left. The consulate was left unsecured for much of the three weeks, so evidence had been contaminated and much had disappeared.
This is the level of priority our government gave to the investigation of the murder of our ambassador, a staffer and two Navy SEALs. It took three weeks to even begin the hands-on investigating, but Rice, within days of the attack, was already trying to “spin” the attack away from State Department negligence. Shameful.
Furthermore, State Department emails that were exchanged shortly after the beginning of the attack shows that they knew within 2 hours that it was a coordinated terrorist attack. One of the subject lines of the emails read, “Update 2: Ansar al-Sharia Claims Responsibility for Benghazi Attack.” But yet, Rice still claims that the intelligence at the time suggested a spontaneous protest?
Rice should start looking for another line of work because Americans just aren’t buying it…
