I have come to expect precious little from the liberal mainstream media. However, even with my most meager of expectations, they still find new ways to disappoint.
The liberal media has, for years, skewed news to fit a leftist agenda. With the outrageous attack on our consulate in Benghazi that resulted in the death of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, the liberal media passed up an opportunity at modest redemption. They actually covered the story…up until the very moment that the wheels fell off of the Obama Administration’s narrative of the event. When it became obvious that this attack was going to blow back on the inept and corrupt Obama Administration, the media suddenly lost interest in reporting on it.
I am not old enough to remember a time when the media was entirely unbiased. I can’t be sure that such a thing ever existed. What I can say, however, with unwaivering certainty, is that even any quasi-objective media outlet should be chomping at the bit to cover this story. With as many holes and glaring contradictions in the aftermath of this attack, a third grader would have no problem demonstrating both incompetence and outright corruption within the Obama Administration. So, the question each of us should be asking is, “Where is the media?”
They cover Benghazi only topically. The media mentions the attack and emerging details in the briefest of ways. While one could charge such glancing coverage of this scandal as incompetence, the fact is that the media was covering the story quite adequately up until the moment that the Obama Administration finally dropped the act and admitted that the terrorist attack was not an impromptu demonstration. And as details emerged that the State Department had shockingly denied repeated requests for increased security while Obama dodged intelligence briefings to get in nine holes, the media became increasingly more silent on the issue, hoping it would simply go away. It won’t.
As our embassy in Cairo was attacked, the embassy issued a statement condemning those that would dare to hurt the “feelings” of Muslims. After Mitt Romney condemned this cowardly, backwards statement, President Obama charged Romney with “shooting from the hip and aiming later”- a charge the liberal mainstream media was all-too-happy to spread for the president.
However, the Obama Administration and State Department pushed for weeks to try and get the American people to believe that this tragedy was as a result of a YouTube video that spawned a demonstration that got out of hand. Now that we know we were lied to, where is the media to denounce the president for “shooting from the hit and aiming later” for weeks? If Romney is guilty of speaking when not having all the facts, shouldn’t Obama be called out for blaming this on a YouTube video and outright lying about the true nature of this attack?
But he won’t- doing so would conflict with the liberal agenda. And that’s the problem; we cannot expect to be getting the truth from a mainstream media outlet that refuses to ask tough questions for fear that the answers might conflict with their agenda.
Increasingly, the responsibility to report on the news has fallen upon us in the alternative media- a role we gladly accept. The alternative media provides a much-needed service to the American people as it has become the bastion of a willingness to provide details that are politically inconvenient for the mainstream media’s agenda.
However, no matter how skilled the alternative media has become at informing the people, it does not excuse the mainstream media from their responsibilities to the American people. If you want to be a journalist, you need to report the news, not control it.
