There Are Four Reasons We’ve Lost The Argument Over Tax Increases On The Wealthy

Over at Breitbart, John Nolte can’t believe we’re losing the argument over raising taxes.

How is it that the GOP is so feckless and ineffective that it can’t even convince the 48% who voted for Romney that raising taxes on those making over $250,000 is both pointless and bad policy:

Sixty percent of all Americans back higher taxes on higher incomes in the new Post-ABC data. Earlier this month, an identical 60 percent of voters in the presidential election said income taxes should be raised on income over $250,000, according to the national exit poll.

Only 37% oppose the tax hike.

Other than a complete inability to communicate, there’s no rhyme or reason for this. Facts, logic, and history are all with us in this debate, but we still can’t make our case to more than 37% of adults?

It’s not hard to explain how we’re losing this argument with the American people.

#1) We tell the American people that deficit control should be our #1 priority, they’ve listened and they believe that tax increases on the wealthy should be part of that process.

#2) Democrats have been telling the American people that raising taxes on the rich is going to fix our deficit problems. This isn’t true, but a lot of people believe it.

#3) It’s very easy to agree to raise OTHER PEOPLE’s taxes if your taxes aren’t impacted. If you’re a middle class American who pays no income taxes and someone tells you that we can fix all of our problems by taxing the rich a little more, while you won’t have to pay anything else, it’s something you WANT to believe.

#4) The alternative to raising taxes is cutting spending and the three biggest programs are Defense, Social Security and Medicare. Despite agreeing to a scenario that they knew would lead to defense cuts last year, Republicans in Congress didn’t mean it and now oppose cuts to defense. Meanwhile, cuts to Social Security and Medicare are unpopular because everyone gets a cut of that.

Only when Americans have to choose between tax increases and benefit cuts will they start to care about tax increases again.

I don’t hear anyone in leadership on the Right making the argument, even trying to make the argument. No one (in leadership) has said where I can hear it that if it’s increased revenue wanted we need to get a bigger economic pie, expand the economy through reduced regulation on businesses. These guys in Republican leadership act like they were defeated by 90% of the vote & Obama can shoot lasers out of his eyes & poop gold.

Had we allowed our banks to fail instead of bailing them out, the American sentiment would be different. But when you see the corporate wealthy constantly getting away with robbing the american people, you want to get back at them. I know that sounds Occupy Wall Streetish, but it’s an observation of the American sentiment-not my political stance. The republicans should have stood against the bail outs. Now they are nothing more than the corporatist they have always been accused of being, and who better to solidify that image than Mitt Romney?

The basic problem is that the American people receive no education on economics in public schools; this creates a pool of economically ignorant citizens who are vulnerable to misinformation. The Democrats have succeeded in selling the lie that so-called “tax breaks” or “tax cuts”(lower marginal tax rates) need to be “paid for”, so it’s then logical that higher tax rates are something positive. Combine this with class warfare, and you have a large majority seeing nothing wrong with “taxing the rich” as a way to make things better.
The economic reality that higher taxes make us all poorer is a message that needs to be part of the conservative agenda.

Economics isn’t important. Now when you start talking the x factor, you’ll have their attention

Dems have been saying millionaires should be paying more so take them up on it – pass a bill but set the upper rate for those actually earning $1M, not 250K. And just for Warren’s benefit, let’s take him up on his feelings that he should be paying more – add a tax on people with more than $1B in Stock Portfolios (yes – tax actual wealth, not just income – we already do it with property taxes) – and let’s really hear how Warren feels about taxes.

John I think you’re off target here. Its not so much that we’ve lost the conservative argument but that we lost — the election. And with the exception of the 2010 mid-terms (which was a fluke) we’ve been in loser mode since 11/7/06. We Republicans have completely forgotten what Ronald Reagan taught us about winning elections.

Actually, it is way more sinister than all of this, we have a populace that believes they are OWED something, being owed something, you shouldn’t have to pay for it..
They believe that if you have something they don’t, you didn’t earn it (or build it, remember BHO said this?)..
So as a matter of fact, if you have all that stuff, you should pay for them to have it too, you didn’t earn it, so they want it also..
A whole part of our society either believes this, or believes that it isn’t their job to pay for it, somebody has to, and it should be the rich..
The argument does need to be dumbed down, and explained, there are SOOO many people that don’t realize, people with money have money because they sell things/services to other people (usually those screaming somebody else needs to pay their taxes) and little do they realize, their costs go up to cover those tax increases.
THE WORST PART, the Democrats know this, and yet STILL pretend the rich will be paying those taxes.. they have fooled the public again.. and they bought it, hook, line, and sinker..

I disagree with you on where the cuts are needed with no increase in taxes. All the benefits that the three branches of our government has ballooned to the point where they are no longer sustainable. Yet these people claim that its Defense, Social Security, and Medicare that is the problem. If you tell a lie long enough, people will believe it.

The real cancer on our economy is the entire area of public sector union reimbursement, especially pensions. Due to the fact that the taxpayers don’t have a seat at the table during those negotiations, and also due to the circle of corruption between the Democrat Party and the public sector unions, where the unions back Democrat candidates, who then vote the unions whatever they want, union retirees make multiples of what the taxpayers who support them are able to make at retirement. Another Democrat pyramid scheme.

I also believe the American people see the extremely wealthy ruling class and believe that anyone who makes over 250,000 is a part of the richy rich who don’t pay enough in taxes. What the Republican’s repeatedly fail to do is explain in simple terms just how the tax system works and how the person who has investment income is paying a double tax when they incur a capital gains tax. They also need to explain that the small businessman is the main target…..the ruling elites who control global companies i.e. General Electric can afford to pay higher taxes (that is if they even pay them at all)…..Furthermore higher taxes on small business is a sure way to eliminate competition. They should also talk about how the elites use tax free “foundations” to shield their incomes.

I think you have it right. I hate to say this, but I think the GOP needs to “dumb it down” so that John and Jane Doe, who only listen to or read political sound bites, will take notice and “get it”. Most people don’t understand the difference between the deficit and the debt, nor do they care. This is what the Democrats are actually quite savvy at … they appeal to a more personal level … lies as it may be … they make it sound believable and tell the people how it will affect them personally. If you hear nothing that you understand from the other side or think it doesn’t affect you, you will go with what makes sense and affects you.

Take away “unlimited” unemployment benefits and “assistance” to those not truly in need……..and you’ll see just how intelligent the people actually are. Those following the Dem’s are only ignorant to the fact that the “gravy train” can be lost when the country goes belly up. Unfortunately, I do not think you can get them to believe it……..because they love being supported, and do not WANT to believe.
